Attending a wedding in Las Vegas was the perfect excuse to go the extra mile (or 2?) & visit top gun.
It was a chance to catch up with fellow Aussie Peter Goldsmith & I'd like to thank him for his hospitality & allowing my wife & I to share his tent & introducing us to his friends Jack Diaz, Dave Wigley & Dave's sister, Victoria.
My impressions of Top Gun? To me it was just another scale contest but I mean that in the nicest possible way. Relaxed, laid back, familiar, old friends catching up. The models, to my eyes, rated from good to outstanding & the organisation kept the wheels rolling & the show interesting.
Favourite models? Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to check out Dave Wigley's Beaufighter but I loved Mike Barbee's T-34 & James Prive's Stinson. Jack Diaz's Fouga was a sleeper, didn't look too special until you had a close look when you could really appreciate how good it is & I think his static score reflects how accurate it represents the full scale & how it relates to his documentation.
It's a shame I didn't get to meet Mike Chilson but that's just the way it worked out I suppose.
John.
