From first hand experience. Don't forget to add the support arm to the muffler on the side opposite the exhaust that is too much mass and vibration and the muffler will break.

Oh I forgot to mention before you go to all that trouble of building a new muffler. I would consider flying the airplane with the muffler you think will allow satisfactory performance and since it wont fit in the cowl, weigh the cowl and put some weight on the front to compensate for the cowl and test fly without the cowl.
I do this routinely on airplanes when i want easy access to the engine for the first few flights.....

Tim, yes it was quite an adventure.  It actually calmed me down as I was concentrating on keeping the wings level while trying to climb without stalling.  The plane flew great after I got it in the air.  You don't see it from the video but I had grass stains on the top of the wing.

Finished up getting all the parts ready for the muffler last night.  Will take them to my buddy tonight for welding.

After a visit to my buddy Alan's (Catfish Aviation) I now have a complete exhaust setup for the P-51.  Ha Ha, the Catfish Aviation is a little bit of a joke.  We both live in Catfish NC; we go by another city and postal code but you can look it up, as it's on the map .  Alan fly's RC as well as powered paragliding.  He has just finished building an ultralight, hence "Catfish Aviation"


Alan does some nice work.  His TIG welder looks like something from NASA (all the bells and whistles)

The spark plug wire comes very close to the new exhaust so in addition to the silicone wrap I added some fiberglass heat shielding and zip tied it back to help with air flow.

I had to move my fuel tank vent over some as well as it was a little close to the new exhaust.

A few small modifications to the cowling were needed.  As you can see, everything is hidden inside the cowl.

Next up I will to some more running and tuning with the cowl removed to see what kind of performance I get.  Then I will add the cowl back on to see if the tuning changes and go from there.

Thanks Steve.  I ran about a gallon of gas through it last night making carb adjustments.  It seems I have only picked up ~600 RPM.  I'm turning a 26X10 sport prop at 5800rpm.  Seems like I should be getting 200 to 400 more at least???

I put the cowl back on to see if I got any changes and I did.  I lost ~200 RPM on the high end and I let it idle for a long time and then it died on throttle up.  So it appears my low end is now to lean and the high end to rich with the cowl on.  It was getting close to being dark so I called it quits for the night.  

I'm thinking now I need to do some more adjusting with the cowl on to see if I get any changes.  Also, I have a 25X10 prop I need to try to see if that makes a difference.  I'm also thinking to that I need to build a test stand.  Then I can experiment with different mufflers, and even compare the P-51 engine to the engine I picked up for the P-40 I'm building.
