I much prefer polyurethane based paints such as the old Chevron Perfect Paint brand.

 

  1. Easy to spray.
  2. Flows out evenly.
  3. Thins and cleans up with mineral spirits.
  4. Not as toxic and nasty as automotive paints.
  5. Surface is impervious to just about every thing. You can even clean off spilled CA by using straight nitro methane without damaging the surface.
  6. Removal is easy with a water based paint stripper for repair work.
  7. Compatible with most other paints if you find it necessary to mix types of paints.

Most of my painted planes are of the civilian types and shiny, so I prefer auto catalyzed paints but It does get little pricey if your doing multiple colors.

I voted multiple types.  My current favourite method uses grey car type primer followed by cellulose car colour  or enamels, either Humbol (lots of colours) or household from the spray can or mixed from tins.  I usually clear coat in one part polyurethane to even out the different gloss levels & to fuelproof. - John.

I have switched over to latex paints from automotive paints because of cost, fumes [neighbors complaint].May be a bit slower in drying times. After painting a camoflauge scheme I spray with a water based satin finish polyueathane

How is the fuel proofing against nitro with the water based poly.  I have used oil based wattyl etc but it does yellow light colours.  What brand have you used.

   Hi Andy,

    As of yet I have not tried any of the water-based clear with nitro  but I do know that it does not affect standard glow fuel or petrol fuel.

The brand I use is COBOTTS CRYSTAL CLEAR and it does not turn yellow. You can spray it on with hardly any thinning as it is very thin in the tin.

Dont be fooled by the bluish tinge as it dries clear. Comes in Satin,Semi-gloss and Gloss.
