I'm not an 'early adopter' so I went 2.4 relatively late. I have not retired my JR gear on 36 Mhz because it worked perfectly before & continues to do so. Having said that every new model I build is on 2.4 using a Futaba 12C, 14 channel radio and I won't be buying any more 36 Mhz gear, it seems like it's not available in Australia anyway.
The change to 2.4 meant a complete change of receivers & stuff & I wasn't convinced that the Spektrum system JR was using was foolproof hence the change to Futaba.
As for sticking with 36 Mhz for some models, I believe the adoption of 2.4 equipment has been the biggest improvement to safety yet for 36 Mhz equipment because very few people still use it meaning the biggest fault with 36 Mhz, the chances of getting shot down by someone on your frequency are next to nil, even the 'toy aeroplanes' use 2.4 these days.
