The story of Frank Luke and his accomplishments during WWI make fascinating reading in the book "The Stand". I just finished reading it and if you need to get charged up to start building a Spad this book will do it.
The quick story is he was the leading WWI Ace at the time he was killed in action. He accomplished all of his kills in about a three week time period. His final flight and refusal to surrender earned him the Medal of Honor.
Just do a Google search for the book and you will find it. There is also a web site with a documentary DVD for sale on the process of researching the legend and writing the facts up in the book.
Kudos to Mike at Warbird Radio for interviewing the author and bringing the book to my attention.
