Hi guys,

I recently visited a small museum at Agnes Water, on the Queensland Central Coast (Australia). In the museum I discovered a piece of an aircraft, which appears to have battle damage from a 50 cal. or similar. It has American markings on it, and appears to be a tailplane of sorts. It only has trim tabs, and no elevators, so presumably it was a moveable tailplane? Apparently it was found on one of the local beaches in 1980. No-one from the museum knows what it is from. It is assumed it is from WWII, possibly from the Battle of the Coral Sea. Any ideas as to what aircraft it is from?

Don't believe I have ever seen a star and bar on any part of the tail of a US aircraft from the second world war period. Was their any remnants of the red stripe through the middle of the bar on the insignia? If so, that would indicate a post-war insignia which would then mean it could be from any US military aircraft since 1946. If it is a second world war era insignia then my guess would be it is either not part of the tailplane or the insignia was put on a civilian aircraft of some sort for decoration and may not be military at all.

Hi Chad,

You may be right, but it is a mystery to me. I could see some remnants of the bars, they appear as a lighter shade of white, like the bars have flaked off. There are some remnants of dark blue for the bars, but no red.

The page on the floor with the photos shows a drone being rocket launched, I think. The wing has some similarities to the Radioplane/Northrop MQM-36 Shelduck, in particular the control rod fairings and centerline fairing. There are quite few pics online. It appears that Marilyn Monroe helped assemble them in '45.

As I noted previously the placement of the insignia indicated to me that it may not be part of a tailplane. The next logical choice then would be that it is a very small wing. With that in mind I did a Google search for "target drone" and quickly found this:

Northrop KD2R5 "Shelduck"

I think this is where the wing came from. More info here: http://www.wmof.com/kd2r5.htm

That's it! It's funny, as I too was looking for a similar thing - a flying bomb. Well done guys! Gotta love RCSB.

Brad, yes you are correct about the document on the floor. I think it was a suggestion as to what it could have been, but still no-one was sure. But you both have hit the nail on the head, I think!
