Another clue!

1. Its design was based off a 1930's airliner.
2. It had three roles in it's lifetime... Transport, Maritime Patrol, and Heavy Bomber.
3. Used by two countries.
4. One of these was assigned to a leader, but he never flew in it. 
5. around 3800 mile (6100 km) range.

Sorry Alan, not it... Though I must say you guys are hitting a pretty tight pattern around the very center of the target. You guys are getting closer! 

Another Clue... 

1. Its design was based off a 1930's airliner.

8. After WWII an example of this aircraft was shipped to the US along with other examples of this country's aircraft.
