New clues added:
  • Originally designed as a day fighter
  • Looking for the night fighter variant, which featured:
    • Oblique-firing weapons
    • Nose mounted radar
    • Clear panels on the underside of the nose, allowing pilot to see down and below
  • Twin engines
  • day fighter/escort role abandoned in favor of recon role for daylight operations
  • Recon version had crew of three
  • Night fighter version had crew of two

Yes.


The sole remaining Irving was restored at NASM, completed in 1983 after more than 17,000 man hours of work.

Both upward and downward firing weapons were used with the type.  The museum's example has only the upward firing weapons.

The downward firing weapons were sighted through an opening in the instrument panel (see below) and the clear panels on the lower nose.
