Grumman J2F Duck? Almost fits, but maybe not. Wiki says introduced in 1936, and used by 5 countries including the USA.
By the way, if you haven't seen " Murphy's War" (featuring this airplane), find it and watch it! Peter O'Toole at his best. Great footage of the J2F. Looks like Amazon and Apple Itunes have it, but it's a $3.99 rental. Worth it I think if you haven't seen it.
