Grumman J2F Duck?  Almost fits, but maybe not.  Wiki says introduced in 1936, and used by 5 countries including the USA.

By the way, if you haven't seen "Murphy's War" (featuring this airplane), find it and watch it!  Peter O'Toole at his best.  Great footage of the J2F.  Looks like Amazon and Apple Itunes have it, but it's a $3.99 rental.  Worth it I think if you haven't seen it.
