OK, aside from the obvious interesting fact, what is the significance of these 2 aircraft?

They werent actually, which is probably another interesting discussion. The serial #s were assigned in 1943, but due to production delays they were not delivered until 1945. The most interesting part of the discussion, to me anyway, is that these were built under contract by Consolidated-Vultee in Nashville. There were 113 P-38L's built in Nashville before the contract was cancelled after VE day.

Of the ones built in Nashville 57 were assigned to the Sixth AF and sent to the Panama Canal Zone. If anyone happens to know where I might find pictures from Howard Field and France Field PCZ I have been searching for photos of some of the aircraft that were there. Trying to find one of the Nashville built planes. I have always wanted to build a nice P-38 and do it in colors and markings of one of the C-V built aircraft. One in particular I would like to find is 43-50237, which was piloted by Winton "Bones" Marshall. Who later became an ace during the Korean war flying in the F-86.

Another interesting tid bit I found while researching serial #s, one of the airframes flown by Daryl Greenamyer as Yippee was 43-50281, N138X which was built at  C-V. It was then repainted as "Scatterbrain Kid" and raced by Revis Sirmon before being crashed in 1974. Parts from this airframe as well as another were used to rebuild another airframe which became "Scatterbrain Kid II".

Not all of this is my research by the way, I only got half way there before finding someone else who connected all the dots.
