Colorful character!

Warbird is a nebulous label.  As we've been using it here ("any airplane used by any military") the Wright Flyer, purchased b the US Army might have been the first in 1909. I should look deeper into the history of the Mexican Revolution.

On the topic of "mercenary pilots" the famed Flying Tigers were initially a rag-tag group of US pilots in it entirely for the money...apparently quite good money.  And several weren't that happy about the unit being handed over to the US military when America entered the war.
