It reminds me of the old steam locomotives were they had to look out the side to see around the engine up front.
Maybe they had a periscope to look straight ahead.

At the "Warbirds and Classics over the Blue Grass" fly in this weekend I was looking at the collection of WW1 airplanes and started talking about tactics employed in combat. I wondered who had the first mirror mounted in their plane to keep a lookout behind for the bad guys slipping in undetected for a shoot down.
I'm sure it was some guy taking his girls compact mirror and sticking it in the plane.
