M-8, M-80, -81 1918 = Army/USN fighter and racer. 2pOmwM; 300hp Wright-Hisso H; span: 32'10" (?>35'0") length: 21'6" (?>24'4" ?>25'0") v: 144/x/58 ceiling: 18,600'. Ordered from Wright-Martin, subcontracted to Loening. Strut-braced shoulder wing, twin rudders. The first military monoplane in the US; originally designed with two rudders. Altitude record of 21,000 set in 1919 by Maj R W Schroeder. POP: 2 prototypes to Army [AS40121/40122], 1 to USN in 1919 [A5631]. Production contract for 5,000 planes cancelled by the Armistice, but design continued as PW-2.
