Was looking through the forums and did not see anyone building any Dick Sarpolus designs, so I thought I'd give him some recognition, specifically for his IL-2 Sturmovik design.Years ago I saw the plans in the AMA mag. and at the time I flew only glow fuel planes and really liked the scale ww2 planes. After reading up on the IL2 I thought this would be a great build, but I wanted a smaller version of the 86" wing span Dick deigned. So, I ripped the 8x11 plan pages out of the magazine and had them blown up to a 64" wing span. Scratch building the plane was simple and a great learning experience. The result was a unique and a fantastic flying plane.
I flew the plane for many years until a servo failure ended it. Since then I have built several larger scale planes, so I immediately order Dick's 86" WS plans from AMA. However, during the build made several minor changes. The big change was a 3 section wing and to have it look more like an IL-10 since I aleady had a set of rotating retracts vs the DC3 type. Shorten the canopy, squared off the tips and removed the scoop in the front.
Fun and easy build for the intermediate builder and I have no doubt this plane will fly as good as the smaller version Currently ready for paint.
pictures coming....
