Greetings from Virginia! I'm a certifiable lurker on this site, marveling and learning all the time from the greats here. Particularly blown away by John R who appears to be missing recently. He inspired me to get the half pound sound system for my next build... And as I love a challenge I'm going to try to build a Top Flite Spitfire so light it can carry it,,, or perhaps dump that idea and drop a mortgage payment on a Brian Taylor 83" one...

But, speaking of weight, I have a question!

I recently completed a 65" ME109e from Skyshark. Power 60 on 6s 5000mah Hyperion, standard servos, electric retracts, flaps, etc. AUW 9 pounds 13 ounces....

So, advice please, for the anxious...

Just go fly it? Or rethink weight issues...

I could:
Switch the servos to Hitec 85mg's on ailerons, rudder, elevator, as they have the same torque as the standards I have in there...
I could go to 5s, or a smaller 6s battery (like 3300mah)

Any thoughts, most August and wise ones? You have all gotten me afflicted by the scale bug... I have built and flown the SS FW190, and am half way through the Horten 229 by Wings on the Web. Sadly I'm only attracted to planes that are difficult to fly. And my reservoir of talent is quite limited. I would upload a picture but I'm bound to an iPad. Is there a resizing app I could get?

Thanks for the help gentlemen.

Scott

Scott - it sounds like you solved your dilemma.  9+ pounds on a 65" aiplane is going to be difficult, I would think - landing speeds would be higher and with the narrow gear of a 109 that's asking for a lot of maintenance, as well as all the other issues.

Looks good - and thanks for introducing yourself.

Try not to "over worry".  I flew an older TF corsair and P-47 both were over 10 lbs.  Both flew fine.  Just be careful on the landing.

Are you flying at LCA?just wondering.

Scott, the take off will deserve some attention, also.  The Me-109 is legendarily (a word ?) squirrelly on its gear.  Do you know the wing area?  You're at 10.8 lbs and the plane is sleek.  My Spitfire, B-25, and F6F-3 fly at similar weights (all10.0-10.1 lbs).  The WA's are, respectively, 850 sq. in., 670, and 770.  The B-25 flies in a noticeably different manner.  It has the smallest WA, is not sleek, and has to fly and land at high air-speeds (and power apps.).  John Ranson flies such a plane as yours and describes take-off, flying, and landing in this site or on YouTube, I forget which.

Thanks gentlemen! I discovered last evening that my Hyperion battery is notoriously heavy. Bought a Turnigy 6s 4000 and will get the ready to fly weight down to a little under 9.5 pounds. Clearly I won't fly this until I'm good and practiced... I have a Skyshark FW190 that will be the primary practice plane. Sounds like I should actually do some taxi tests on this one...

The 190...

I have been thinking about this all day - I mentioned it in a PM to Bob this morning - the similar sized airplane that I had that was so touchy was (I think) over 11 lbs.  You really had to pay attention and be careful.  I think (outside of the narrow landing gear issues) that flying will be OK.  Get the tail up as soon as you can on take off so you have some rudder authority - that's what I do on my WWI planes.
