Hi All,
I've been lurking here for a couple of years now. Basically as a way to keep in touch with the hobby. As a rule, I hate to actively particiate in forums. But the urge to start posting has been steadily increasing with the urge to get back into the hobby.
I've been building and flying models on and off for some 55 years now. Military career, family, lack of flying sites, etc. All the normal excuses for the off portion.
My mother actually started me in this when I was 5. She built me a really nice little Guillows biplane when I was really sick. Which I promply tried to fly in the living room. Once! But it got my attention. I then did the control line and free flight thing. Had an Uncle who did a lot of free flight and he taught me a lot. Especially silk and dope covering. He also tied some of the most beutiful fishing flies...
My first RC was a Sig Super Sinbad glider with a Citizenship single channel escapement radio. Flutter Rudder for those of you who remember the things. First scale was the old Top Flight, red box P-51B. You know! The one that came as a balsa log with instructions to carve away anything that didn't look like the Mustang. I installed a set of Rhom retracts in that thing and used a Webra 61 Blackhead to fly it. Power was adequate. And the radio was a system called the Blue Max. It was a 6 channel kit radio. All descrete components which I assembled with the help of a local Ham. And it even worked! Something like 14oz of torque from the servos.
Since then I've done a fair bit. Always tried to keep a beater on hand while building that next scale bird. I've done Proctor, VK, Top Flight and at least assisted on a number of others. I can scratch from a set of plans and even kit bask from two or more wrecks.
For the last 10 or so years I've not done a lot. Lack of readily available flying site combined with work, kids, etc. But the daughters are out of the house and the wife and I are looking at retiring in 31 months (not that we're counting). At which time we move back to Michigan (Virginia now) and I catch up on sniffing all those wonderful fumes in this hobby!
In the meantime, I'm glad to be here. I've enjoyed many of the build threads and decided I can still learn more from you guys than I can teach you. So if I'm quiet, it doesn't mean I'm not here.
