Anybody know what happened to the plans from Carstens now that they are out of business?

Good news. While not officially available right now, the 1500 some odd plans in the Flying Models catalog are not lost.

Flying Aces Press purchased all the assets of Flying Models from Carstens a few weeks before Toledo and will be offering plans, back issues and new subscriptions on the Flying Models web site soon.

"Flying Aces Press?" you might ask, "Who are they?"

Well, since you asked, here is the back story.

I was hired to edit Flying Models in early 2014, stepping in to fill the void as Frank Fanelli retired. I was thrilled by the opportunity, as FM has long been my favorite US modeling magazine. Unfortunately, Carstens ceased operations at the end of last summer and I was left with a couple of prospects. One was to put "Last Editor of Flying Models" on my resume. Given that FM dates to the late 1920s and that I feel like I have done a decent job of writing about modeling and editing contributions from others, I wasn't too keen on this prospect. The other option was to start my own company, cut a deal with Carstens to purchase FM, and run the old flag up a new pole. That option had more appeal, and thus was born Flying Aces Press, LLC.

As you can imagine, I've got my hands full right now scrambling on many fronts, but I making progress. I had a booth at Toledo and was overwhelmed by the response to the news. For now, keep your eye on the Flying Models web site and wrap up the current projects on your bench.

One other point of interest. I will be honoring any remaining subscription obligation you might have from Carstens once the press is running again. Regardless of whether you have two remaining issues due or 20, I have the old subscriber list and you will see those come through your mailbox on my nickel.

You can also contact me directly if you have any other questions or comments.

cool stuff thayer.....If it were not for the inspiration of Flying Models Magazine in my early youth, scoping out the plans, figuring out how they all fit together, and all the many dreams of then flying one day from them, I would not be flying today...looking forward to the new mag!

Very cool!  We've lost a lot of publications.  It's good to see new life in one.
