I copied this post of mine from another forum. Relatively dead over there so posted again here.

My name is Eric and I live in eastern AL.

My short-ish history of RC...got a Nimbus 2-channel radio back in the late 70's when I was a youngster as a step up from control line. Flew a basic sail plane but quickly reached the end of that radio's usefulness. In college in the mid 80's I got my first proper Futaba 4-channel radio and flew a few trainers and then some more advanced models, but nothing fancy. Couldn't afford to do much more than that and eventually stopped. Quit college and went active duty Army in the late 80's. On active duty I built and immediately crashed a Top Flite Zero on its first flight…radio issues. I replaced that plane with a .61 sized OS Max piped pattern plane and a new Futaba 6-channel radio. That rocket ship was awesome and I got some great flights out of it before another radio issue took it down. Got my pilots license in 2002 so didn't even think of RC for a while. Sold my full scale plane in 2006 so I could afford to go back active duty Army. Didn't do anything RC related until about 2010 and tried an RC Helicopter. That was a short disaster and that's the end of my RC history.

I'm retired from the Army now and have time I need to constructively fill...and a few extra bucks. I'd love to get another real airplane, preferably a kit. Realistically though I don't have enough money in retirement to be able to afford to either build it or fly it. Thus, my renewed interest in RC.

I've always wanted to build and fly a large-ish scale F3F or F4F. I love how the landing gear works. I've been looking at radios but my knowledge is all out of date by decades. JR and Futaba used to be king of the hill but now JR is dead? I could only afford basic gear in the past. When looking at radios I don't even recognize most of the names. It also looks like you need to shop ala carte...receivers, servos and even batteries are separate. So it begins.

I’ve browsed through some. Pretty intimidating knowing what I want to build vs what my skill level is at.

LOL - that's true for all of us!
Stretch your legs though - you said you built a TF Zero - did you glass it or film cover?
You can find scale kits to enhance your skills on, glassing and panel lines and such
Cockpits you have to approach as a separate build just about
Keep browsing, you will find lots of possibilities
And don't neglect the tutorials!

I'm pretty sure I covered that Zero with film, but it was so long ago I forget.  That does nudge my memory some...I plans-built a tiny ducted fan F15 back in the early 90's.  I did glass cover and paint that.  It never flew though.  Too heavy, and I was unable to afford the powerplant at the time.  It would probably have been perfect with the new EDF...except it was too heavy.

Army,

Welcome to a library of resources. The family atmosphere shares individual experiences
you won't find anywhere else on the web. Glad another head down, butt up ducted fan
junkie is onboard. Nothing like four hours trying to get a three minute flight ;^)
