Hello Everyone,

I'm an avid rc'r that has been building planes since high school(more building than flying). Over the last couple of years I've gotten back into building but recently I've lost my garage to build. My new rental has a smaller garage so we'll see what we can do.

At my last place I was able to build the Manzano Laser works Sperry Messenger and then I got my hands on a Top Flite p47 that I detailed here.  https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?3119114-TopFl ite-p47-63 Should've probably kept it more up to date.

Currently I'm working on the estar bellanca decathalon on my small workbench. Going forward I would like to get more into scratch building perferably in the ~40" ws range. I don't see a lot of posts on smaller scale models being built? Is the reason its harder to do as they get smaller? Not sure what I want to build next but with lockdown going on I have quite a bit of time on my hands.

Look forward to talking to you all.

Nick

PS. The preview post window shows this whole post as being underlined so we'll see what happens when I click post;)

Nick,
May I be among the first to have the honor of welcoming you to this site. Glad to have you aboard & know that you’re not alone with this Coronavirus thing going around. Not to worry about size of the model. Here, size doesn’t matter. Most of us are retired or dreaming of retirement. I, for one, built several small Guillow’s models & posted them here. You can view my builds on “ Other kits” column, 2nd page & I think on 3rd page of “Super detailing Guillow’s S.E.5 & Wright Bro’s Flyer”. Both were built for display. I often joke my models would make a farmer happy by fast taxiing over his fields creating furrows. My current project? Yep, another Guillow’s. This one is a P-51 to be done up in Flite Metal for that natural high polished metal look as Big Beautiful Doll for my daughter.

Again, welcome & you’ll have plenty of company!

Gary

Welcome to the site, to answer the question about airplane size, bigger planes fly better.
I lived on Whidbey Island for 10 of the 15 years I was stationed there.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the warm welcome! I’m looking forward to getting to know all of you.

Gary I checked out your super detailing thread and it was great! I might have to pick up a Guillows kit now. Also not sure I understand what you mean by smaller planes plow better?

Sparky I remember coming across your P47 on Manzano back when I was in high school but I never picked it up. Maybe now is the time. I still haven’t been up to Whidbey Island yet, I should take a drive this weekend just to get out of the house and check it out.

Michael Thanks for the welcome!

I’m getting close to finishing my Estar Decathlon and will have to soon decide on my next project any suggestions? I’ve always wanted to build a T34 Mentor or a Tucano and I think I’m at the point where I should try doing something from scratch.

Nick,
Thank you for checking out my build thread! It’s an honor to have you onboard. My reference to “...small models plow better” was a tongue in cheek expression to the fact my models were built for display only. So if they were to ever run down a makeshift runway, they would never get off the ground. However, the wheels & tail skids would dig furrows into the ground making a farmer happy.... :0)

Guillow’s has come a long way & are now laser cut. My models were still from the old die-cut vintage. Incidentally, the Guillow’s B-29 is not in production & now considered a collector’s item & priced to reflect that. What’s ironic is the plastic accessories fit terribly.
