Hi All: I am getting very close to completing a CARF P-51D airplane that will be used as a static display at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum in Savannah, GA. It will be part of an exhibit telling the story of the Fighting Scouts of WWII. They were mostly a group of former bomber pilots who had completed their tours and volunteered to fly P-51s to "Scout" ahead of the bomber stream on missions.

Very important to fighters making it successfully to Berlin and back was the use of long range drop tanks. The Scouts used 110 gal. paper tanks and I have had them modeled here by a friend with a 3D printer and a LOT of design talent. I added the tubing, he also did the pylons for the wings.

Thanks. It tells an important story that needs to be told for future generations.

Will you be sharing the 3d files on here?  Or do you have any plans to sell the drop tank?

thanks, although it isn't going to fly and have all those complications like gear, motor, servos, etc., there were still considerations like how to you beef it up and design and build a mounting bracket where you can put it on an 11 foot tall pole?

It took three months to get the kit in my hands from when I ordered it right after the new year. I had only one month to do all the painting, prep work, etc., to have it ready to pack up and ship to Savannah to the museum. Not nearly enough time!

I am glad that all the markings on the plane are painted on, using stencils like the real thing. It would be a shame to put stickers on there and not let that beautiful surface detail to show through from underneath!
