Hi all,

After some months retired from the hobby it s time to return and show you my finished Typhoon.
Being my second one I chose the Kuhn s glassfibre fuselage. Due to the compromise between a decent AUW to achive and the prototype s short nose, I tried to locate everything as forward as possible and install some hardware components as light as I could:

- I used some carbon fibre mouldings to set up the tail gear. The tail wheel tyre is sponge type.
- Pull-pull system with kevlar wires to control the rudder.
- The throttle servo is located directly onto the firewall.
- The other fuselage servos are installed on a sliding tray as far forward in the fuselage as I could.
- Both air reservoirs for the retracts are fitted behind the leading edge near the fuselage.
- I fitted the heavy glassfibre spinner from Kuhn but I m not completely confident of it because its flywheel effect.
- Two redundant batteries in ply boxes side by side the engine stuck onto the firewall.

Specifications:
- Plans: Brian taylor.
- Engine: OS 120 SIII pumped; 16,5 x 8 Bolly carbon prop (8700 max rpm, 1900 at idle)
- Fuel tank: Sullivan 16 oz.
- Main Retracts: Unitracts International (pneumatic); Sullivan wheels.
- Warbirdcolors paint.
- Stencils: Flightlinegraphics.
- Total weight (dry): 6.450 gr plus 960 gr ballast---7.410 gr (16,30 lb)

The prototype is not maidened yet because I m waiting for a new engine carburettor.

Sorry for the absent antenna mast!!

My next project is a new 1,4 scale Hurricane from Mick Reeves after refused to build a Jerry Bates Wildcat (backed out at the last minute)

Cheers.

Jose.

Jose,

That is an outstanding Typhoon my friend. . . . . . . .  You did a good job on it and I hope it flies as good as it looks.  Good luck with your maiden flight.  I wish many years of enjoyable flying with it. . . . . .

Fantastic out come Jose' .

She turned out really well.

Don't worry about the spinner. There's no real centrifugal force issues.

I fly the same spinner on my P40 Warhawk.

I have changed the glass lay up weights and am now getting the fuselage to around 270 - 275 grams.

The tail fin to around 45 - 48 grams.

I make the spinner really heavy for this kit because of the long tail moment.

My Typhoon Mk 1B fuselage kit in available from Sarik Hobbies.

Hello,

After having many engine troubles during the last weeks (...months), yesterday the Typhoon was maidened.
To find a fine engine tunning has been a real headache, fixed with a new carb-regulator and a huge amount of patient. Now, the engine performs really well. The flywheel effect regarding the heavy spinner is noticeable: the engine is a little bit lazy during the acceleration (increasing revs) and the plane is quite a bit reactive when rolls to the left. Despite that, I´m very happy with it. It has a very good craftmanship, perfectly centered and helps a lot with the overall CoG balance.
To avoid overheating issues the cowl needs inner baffling and the hollowed scale exhausts are effective.

In my opinion, it´s very important to program high differential rates, especially in the fairly sensitive rudder (-70% ; Futaba). Very useful when taxiing.

The plane took off straight and only needed to balance the elevator trim when the gear was raised up and down. It flies smooth and very soon I felt completely confident of its great composure.

It copes very well with the AUW  (7.860 gr)

I did only easy manoeuvres: loops, victory and barrel rolls, fly-bys and low straffing passes

The speed is very scale (and fast) and the sound amazing. The exhaust fitted from RC Specialties (TurboHeader) is a good combination. The OS 120 SIII is powerful enough even in this heavy metal bird.

With the maximum flap deployment programmed (55 degrees) the model settled flat in still air without any pitch changes. With this configuration the aproaching path is very predictable and easily controllable with the throttle.

It touched down surprisingly slow.

In summary, the glass fibre fuselage and accessories from Kuhn are great and a good investment. Only needs to select the rest of the hardware and the overall instalation carefully and the result will be wonderful!

Jose.

Next Sunday the Typhoon will fly again. I hope that a new video will be recorded more successfully than the yesterday one.

Hello,

Despite the very hot temperatures here in Madrid surroundings the Typhoon flew again.
This time, the engine suffered some overheating issues, especially at idling and taxiing.
During the take off the right leg spun and broke the door when retracted causing jumps after touching down.

Some lessons learnt:
- avoid flying under hot temperatures because these overheating problems.
- improve the inner cowl baffling.
- recess the piano wire pins in both legs to avoid  spinning.
- strengthen the main doors fixing points.
- match the inner doors with the main ones. If not, air stream tends to try opening them in flight which may result in damages.
