Hi guys, new member and about to be a first time kit builder. I stumbled upon this site and so far I love it. Great info and tons of builds going on. I've been flying rc off and on for the last 17 years, and have never built a true kit other than two duraplanes (if you can call those kits). I got interested in giant scale several years ago and got a 1/4 scale Yak 55 arf that I've had a blast with. Recently I decided it was time to build some scale warbirds. I've been planning forever to build a big Fokker DVII and a big military Cub.

Looking forward to this building adventure and learning all I can from this site. Thanks all!

Thanks! I plan on doing just that. Thinking of starting with a Balsa USA 1/4 scale Cub, then move on to the DVII. Would a Cub be a good first kit to build?

The BUSA 1/4 scale is a very good flying plane and the build is straight forward.   I suggest you read a build thread to pick up[ some pointers.  I hope you do a construction thread, you will get a lot of helpful advice.

Welcome
Rich

A cub is a great start! I've built that one and you will like it. Robart makes some nice scale gear for it. Just be sure to order the right ones. I believe they make two different ones for the 1/4 scale. Some fuses are wider than other kits. As far as the wing struts, you can do some aluminum air stream tubing from K&S metals. It's hard to find some times but it's out there. Also if your looking for some scale reference to scale fitings. I suggest a set of Bob Neliz plans. There pretty inexpensive. There 1/3 scale. So just do the math. Looking forward to a build from you! Good luck! Have fun with it.

Chris.

Thanks all, I’m really looking forward to getting started. Just waiting for it to cool off down here in south Alabama. My work shop is my garage. Being a proud Navy brat I’m looking at doing the Cub has a NE-1, or, since I work as a paramedic, a
Navy AE-1. But the AE-1 looks like it’s based on the J-5, so not sure which one I’ll be able to do.

HK,

I believe Ed, of Scale Aero (one of this site’s supporting vendors) has very good colored photos of the HE-1. I have a good collection of the L-4 in b+w & some fair coverage of the HE-1. Not sure of the other variants though.

Just letting you know we’re already providing you with offers to help & giving you options; & you haven’t even started yet!
