and theres a story behind the model! One day, i was flying at a field in northern new york (Watertown) when a gentleman pulled up to the field, which was very remote and asked if there was anyone interested in RC equipment that he wished to give away. With no one else around, i kindly accepted the offer and followed him back to his house. Opening a trailer in his driveway, he pulled out boxes of rc stuff to include this kit, which was cut for him in the 80s. Just glancing at the equipment, it was old but still very capable and usable! Not really thinking anything of it, i took the kit home and put it in the basement without looking closely at what i actually had.
I researched the MIG 3 and soon found that i had a great affinity towards it. It didn't take me long to commit to the model, and i proceeded to build it for the next three years.
The first take off was rough, and it was not balanced correctly. It went into a spin during final approach and crashed into a tree, impacting so hard it shattered the carbon fiber prop
I took it home and repaired it, rebalanced it, and rebuilt the engine after the hard prop strike. I also added zigzag stall strips to tame the elliptical wings at about 30% chord. Now, it is the greatest flying airplane that i have ever built.
I don't remember the gentleman's name but he told me that he was a machinist and used to build custom retractible landing gear for scale airplanes. I hope i can find someone that may know of him to show that his kit has been finished and now flies.

Matt,
The Roamin Research plans are sport scale at best, but the resulting model flies beautifully. I completely redesigned the nose, modified the tail, oil cooler and details with on the front end. The wing fillets are built up with balsa and 1/32 ply and are not on the plans. The outline and wing area are way off and the fuselage shape and proportion is not correct. If you ever do build the roamin kit, i still have most of the fiberglass parts that im willing to part with.
The best part of russian warbirds, if you screw something up or if it never works quite right, thats scale!
