Yo Matt!  Welcome to RCSB.

I suggest you start with a kit of a trainer type airplane, don't go all nuts trying to do a glass finish and a lot of detail and stick with fixed gear for now.  If you are not currently flying, the Apprentice series of ARFs from E-Flite are good trainers.

I would also suggest looking at the site supporter program here (LINK) in order to maximize the value of the site to you and your son.
