Hello Don,

This is my first Scale Masters where I am competing in the Expert Division against the likes of Mike Barbee and Greg Hahn. All of the aircraft here are way beyond what you would see at your local flying field in both craftsmanship and fidelity to scale. The judges have a real tough time static judging these planes so they are really "picking the nits" so to speak trying to find some flaw to score these aircraft. If you think about it, these folks are looking at 1/4 and 1/2 point deduction resulting in less than a 6 point difference between 1st and 10th place. That is a very narrow band spread which goes back to my statement about the over all quality of these airplane.

As for the flight judging, yes sir, Mike and Greg are really that good. Not to mention Philip who is nipping at there collective heals. These guys have been flying in contests for decades. They know what models are best suited for contest flying and which are not. More importantly they know how to strategically select and string a series of 9 flight maneuvers together to maximize the scoring potential of the aircraft that they are campaigning. I fly OK but not to the level of these guys and the judges can see that easily. Heck, I can see it when I watch these guys fly. There is flying and there flight choreography. Mike Barbee, Greg Hahn, Dennis Crooks, and Larry Folk to name a few are masters of the later and it would quickly be apparent to you if you were here to see us fly.

Several years ago, I saw Dennis Crooks make a beautiful landing with his Ziroli P-38 after losing and engine.  By losing an engine, I mean it came off the plane in flight!  You can only imagine what that did to balance and the CG.  Yet, he expertly flew a 360 degree landing circut and set it down right on the runway with no further damage.

A friend and I spoke with him later about the incident.  Turned out he was supporting the plane in his trailer, in part, on the engine crankshafts. The vibration from driving across country weakened one of the firewalls, which then failed in flight.

One of the more impressive things I have seen in R/C.

Dennis had a engine out with his big Tigercat and made it back for a very nice engine out landing.
The radial engine will not even turn over some sort of internal failure.
He can handle the unusual situations withe the best.
Sadly we lost the Yellow tail F-100 yesterday, high speed stall or something.

The USSMA ARE LOOKING FOR A Midwest venue to host next years event.
Kansas or some location with facilities and a club to supply the manpower thus would be a great chance for a club to generate some funds, see the premier scale flyers in the country.
I like the current location ( 120 miles from home) but they consider this east so they want to keep the drive easier for the west coast pilots.

I went to the site yesterday to visit friends and watch some flying.
I am not a big WW1 fan but the 1/3 scale Spad is very impressive, the attention to detail is awesome. I wish i would have taken a good camera but only had my phone.
