I do not remember seeing discussions of the RC Scale Nats. This year they are July 17-19.
I have not been to a Nats since 1971. Then it was for control line navy carrier.
I'm thinking of going for Sport Scale.
Would give me a chance to see the AMA facility and maybe see some old friends.
Recommendations on how to prepare would be greatly appreciated. I'll take my Paolo Severin Eindecker.
I would consider entering one of the higher categories instead of sport scale but I'm going just to fly and enjoy the time with fellow AMA'ers.

I have never been to a US NATS although I have done Top Gun 9 times. 10 Worlds 5 Euros and 25 UK Nats. There is nothing quite like the Buzz you get from a good comp.
I suggest you enter something where it is going to get a static judging. Only then will you discover 'Things' that will help you improve the model or the next one.
Even putting together a document set will a useful exercise. You already have the material. Just learn how to assemble it to best advantage.
There is a tutorial on RCSB on documentation. Not quite how I would do it but a good start.
Flying is mostly learning the rules. A competition experienced caller is the key if you have not done it for a long time.
I would quite like to see how the E 1 dose in Static

Richard, thank you for you comments. I have seen the documentation used in the high end scale events and assembling that is not an easy task.
From what I can see, the Eindecker E1 does not have a large body of historic information to draw from but for my purposes, I can get what I need from the several compendiums I have on hand. The specific plane I modeled, the LF193 for Navy order, has limited info but I'll start searching. Color is the hard thing. In my reaserach for what paint to use, I could find no exact color info. General description was Beige. The Germans just doped the raw linen. There seems to be some hints that the planes may have been painted at the unit level. I would think that repainting would be difficult because after the first flew flights, the fuselage wold be soaked inside and out with caster oil.
I was a kid at the Nats in the 1960's when Dave Platt brought the Dauntless with the exact scale, combat finish. It looked like he took a plane right from the Pacific theater and shrunk it down. It caused quite a stir because the finish was not pretty.
Back then, RC scale was exciting becase it seemed like most of the planes crashed becasue of engine or radio problems, or pilot error.

If that is the UK NATS you are talking about I was there as well. Watched him crash with nervs. We stayed at his house last year and went free flight flying at 5 am.. Dave is still red hot keen.
Lets see if I can guide you to the documents. It is not dificult but dose take a day or two.
SHAPE FIRST. Select the 3 v that is closest to your model. Cut it up into Top, Side, and Front. Enlarge etch piece until it fits your rules. 300mm span or so but naturally all at to the same scale. Past etch image on to a piece of card (corex) at the bottom. In the top half past your best photo from that view. (we want judges to look at the photo first) Note by means of arrows, dots, chart tape etc, the differences and errors on the 3V proved by the photos.
Only the one complete side view photo needs to be of the aircraft you have modelled. the other photos can be different aircraft. (top Gun & FAI)
Don't obsess about colours. It is not a big mark. Whethering will be part of the craftsmanship mark
You will not have colour photos and you will not have colour chips. (unless you are modelling a museam example or replica )
That leaves Colour description.
Copy and highlight the description from a Authoritif published document. If it says beige leave it at that. Don't try and find a colour chip. Past all your colour information on another separate piece if card. Head this card, COLOUR DESCRIPTION Add text for the crosses and writing if you have them.
Lastly put together a separate DETAIL sheet, Close up photoes of the the E1 parts that you wish to draw attention to on your model. Not to many and not to cluttered.
Keep captions short and clear. NO long explanation, judges just do not read them.
Judges hate fumbling through a Book or document folder that they have to share, so all my documents are on separate sheets in a loose folder.
There is more to it than that but that basic package will be good for any competition anywhere in the world.
If you engine will start when required and you can fly a straight line and a circle in a X wind you will come about half way up the order, Guaranteed

Thanks. I like your method. More in line with the KISS principle.
What is nice about sport scale classes is the judges stand 15' from model.
I am not wanting to win a trophy but just fly in the event and enjoy the experience. But I also want to put in a solid effort.
Plus this will be my first visit to the AMA site. I would hope to see some old friends.

It would have been one of the AMA NATS 1966-1971 I think. I looked up his bio and it mentioned his T28 having the first retracts at the UK nats in 1967. So must have been after that.

Going over ther scale rules, it states that the prop shaft must have a rounded spinner or rounded nut.
That seems to mean I would have to put a acorn nut on my Valach prop shaft.

I'm signed up. Last year was my first time at the NATS and had a great time.
Flew in Fun Scale novice with a BalsaUSA 1/3 scale Sopwith Pup.
Going to Fun Scale novice again this year but thinking about sportman class
for next year.
