These are some of the maiden flight day pre-flight pics of our Balsa USA 1/4 scale SPAD XIII.
The plane is finished in the colors French ace Felix Madon. I was not real taken with the colors that owner picked but I must admit that it looked fantastic in the air. Covering is Solartex paint is rattlecan from home depot. The pilot is a Aces of Iron figure hand painted by the owner's daughter, she did a great job. The engine is a Syssa 180 and the radio is JR. Weight is about 14 pounds including the pound of lead in the nose to get CG. Control movements were per the BUSA manual.
The maiden flight was very easy, no drama, no knocking knees. It did what it was supposed to do, and it did very well. I was just going to do some taxi tests but that was going so well that I eased back on the elevator stick and she was in a steady climb. The rest of the flight was just that easy. Very little trim changes needed for level flight hands off.
Here are some pics
ready to go.
Back from the mission, no damage reported
SPAD with the happy owner, now he is talking about a D-VII
Unfortunately nobody thought to take any in flight pics. But thats ok because we'll get lots of pics at the Hoosier Dawn Patrol in a couple of weeks.

Guess I should have mentioned that I was the builder and did the test flight. Len is the owner and CFO of the project.
