Hello all,
I've been milling about the forums for about 5 years now but have never really contributed too much. I'm a crew chief on the A-10C Thunderbolt II and am now stationed at Spangdahlem AB Germany. Up until August I was in the 74th FS at Moody AFB, Ga in the world famous Flying Tigers. I've been flying R/C since the age of 6. I was taught from an early age by my father, Rick. Starting in southern California flying an old Cox powered Gentle Lady glider from the backyard hill. Eventually we flew regualarly at the "Flying Circus" in Camarillo, Ca and the Apollo 11 Field in Van Nuys. After our move to Minnesota we flew at the Marion R/C club and the Rice County R/C club. Since then (2006) I have not been involved too much other than the occasional ARF at a soccer field. Things have settled down a bit (and so have I) now so I'm getting back into building The project right now is setting up a workshop... Currently the build plans in order are my 1/3 Balsa USA Sopwith Pup, Ziroli SBD Dauntless, Proctor Jn4-4 Jenny, Ziroli Stuka, Don Smith 141" B-29, Ziroli 118" B25.
The only scale inventory I have right now is a Proctor Neiuport 28 which needs to be recovered and the tail got a bit smashed from the move. I have some arfs and other sport planes just to get back into flying.
Meanwhile If anyone around here is from Germany I could really use some help finding hobby shops and building supplies. Also if anyone knows what the transmitter frequency rules are here It would be of great help. I found a local field in Wittlich Germany but there was no frequency board and I heard from someone that 2.4g isnt used because it is an emergency freq. ? Any insight would be great because I'm pretty uneducated at this point!!!
Thanks and I look forward to some builds and flying when summer rolls around!
Rusty

Hi
I can't help you with regard to hobby shops as I'm in Sweden. However, I do know that the 35MHz band is used for model airplanes in Germany (I think it's the band used for model airplanes in the entire EU) 2.4 GHz is being used for R/C, alot of german companines produces/markets such equipment; Graupner, Robbe, Multiplex and Weatronic comes to mind. As far as I can tell from the manual for my 2.4 Weatronic set, there are no limits to where in the world it can be used... Oh, by the way, if shopping on-line isn't out of the question, check out www.modellhobby.de I think they have regular stores as well, I don't know their locations though...

Hi Rusty, welcome to the forum. You sure have stirred up a lot of memories. I was stationed at Spangdooley from 85 thru 87 and was on the planning team that split the old 52 AGS into three Squadrons. We were flying F-4's in those days and they had began the transition to F-16's when I left. So now its A-10's. Nothing ever remains the same for long. Loved it there. Loved Trier. and loved the German-American Glider Club at Traben-Trarbach.

Welcome Rusty,
I too was stationed in Germany at Sembach AB, which was a forward operating location for the squadron out of Ben****ers, England. Seeing the A-10's flying around was way cool.
I am building an A-10 and I am using one of the airframes from the flying tigers (23rd FW AF80 0186) as my subject. Check out my build thread going here

Hi Rusty,
Welcome to the board, you already know what a great bunch of guys are on here.
Isn't the world small, I am a commercial pilot for Lufthansa, flying the B747-400 and fly to Los Angeles once, sometimes twice a month. I have been to the Apollo 11 field (also called The Basin) in Van nuys numerous times and a friend of mine, Vic Catalasan is gonna let me fly his planes there once he has buddy-boxed his spare transmitter. Somehow he thinks that a mode 1 flyer can't handle his planes
Also I moved to Germany, near Mainz, in 2009 from The Netherlands. I joined a local club and know of a couple of stores for your modelling needs. Most are online, as that seems to be the cheapest way to get stuff here nowadays.
If live in the neigborhood of Frankfurt, we could even setup a meet.
Danny
P.S. I just checked, your about 100 miles west of where I live. Thats doable.

Hello Rusty,
I just read your request so maybe my answer could be a little bit late. freddans is right: concerning the frequency: 2.4 GHz is allowed in Germany, but only if the output energy isn?t more then 100mW. Most of the tramsmitters available here are within this limitation. The other official frequenzy band is 35 MHz, A and B. But this is now running out of interest, because 2.4 GHz exists. Shops and so on is a little bit more difficult. Spangdahlem is, sorry for this, not really in the heart of Germany, concerning r/c modelling. Nearest big towns are Cologne and Wiesbaden. Located in Cologne is DERKUM, a really good supplier. In Gensingen, there is Axels-Hobbywelt. If you are looking for scale kits, check fun-modellbau.de. They offer a lot of wood kits and some ARF?s as well.
Best regards,
Armin

Looks like a great build list. Kinda surprised a big A-10 isn't on there :-) Always been a fan of the A-10.
Have to check out jdeluyck's build.
