Hi,
Thought I should introduce myself as I am about to start my first build.
My son is doing an aerospace engineering degree and over Christmas we started to build a rubber band balsa model. However he lost interest, seemed more interested in seeing his girlfriend!
I carried on but started to read about scale models and thought that sounded far better.
So I have bought a Top Flight Contender. Read that it is meant to be a relatively straight forward build.
All the parts are labelled and cut out and the fun will start this week.
Quick question, I was planning on using Aliphatic glue for most of the wood to wood joins. Or should I be using a CA glue?

Nick,You can use aliphatic glue or carpenters glue or CA. I use Carpenters glue and aliphatic a lot. I use CA for smaller items. All three glue types work fine. The non CA type glues give you a little longer working time. Sometimes that comes in handy.

And you stick your fingers together with much less frequency! 30+ years on and I still get 'em stuck!
Look at Gorilla Wood Glue too - not the foamy kind, it is actually labeled wood glue.
And welcome to RCSB Nick! Before you start your build, take a look at the site supporter program LINK HEREWorth way more than the $20 fee!

It seems you're new in this hobby. Just to be sure ... do you have any experience? Is this your first RC model? If so, you better start with a high wing trainer and fly the Contender second when you have some flying skills. Are you member of a RC club already? If not, look for one in your area and contact them. There's a right and a wrong way to start in this hobby.

If you can tell us a bit more exactly where you are we might be able to find you a local club, If not the BMFA has a list. RCSB can help building but It is almost impossible to get started flying with out one.
BTW,I like Gorilla wood glue as well

Evening all,
Thanks for the replies.
I am very much new to this hobby but it’s the building rather than the flying that brings me into it. In fact I have never flown a rc plane! If/when I get into the flying I will get a ARF trainer and go to a local club, there are a few near by. I think this build will take me many hours and there is no way I will learn to fly with it.
I guess I will be asking a lot of questions moving forward. The stab is built and just starting the elevators. All good so far but very early days.

Nick,
Welcome to the site! any question you have is undoubtedly answered in one of the forums here. If not, just post a question here in your thread and you will get lots of replies to help out. A concern about CA type glues is the potential for an allergic reaction to the fumes. I am one of those lucky ones that is allergic so I use very little CA. It slows down your building process but is more comfortable for me.
Again, welcome!
David

Hi NickI used contender as a basic trainer when they were new and passing the transmitter was the training method. It is quite a process and I wouldn't recommend it. Use the trainer then the Contender, you will be able to say you have built a Dave Platt model. While training with a club pro watch for the moment when you realize you are one with the plan, not looking at the transmitter !
cheers Gregg
