Just thought I would introduce myself. I have been building and flying seriously for about 6 years now, although I have always had a keen interest in aviation and modelling. My father used to do what I am doing now 30 odd years ago. I remember him struggling to keep his electric scratch built planes airborne with their brushed motors and Ni-cad batteries! I just wish he was still around to join me in this great hobby... Such is life.
I have just finished re-finishing my 62" Tony Nijhuis Hawker Hurricane which is a replica of my grandfathers plane he flew in Burma where he was awarded the DFC. The cockpit only has a pilot bust and printed instrument panel, but the outside is done pretty well all scale with panel lines, rivets, landing lights etc. I am now finishing off the same size mk IX spitfire which I am doing a scale cockpit down to seat level. Next on the building board is a 1.8m w/s CAC Wirraway from Airborne magazine plans (i believe it is similar to the David Vaughan Wirraway) that one I plan on making a full cockpit, and by the time I get around to that, I may have enough skill to THINK about starting a thread on the build as my work pails in comparison to some of the builders on here!
The other plan / kit build I have done is an RBC kits F-22 with twin 70mm EDF fans.
Anyway, hope to meet some of you along the way on or off these forums.

Thanks Sean... A fellow Adelaide scale modeller - I didn't think there were a lot of us around 
I was actually tossing up between joining your club or monarto... Things I am thinking about are
1. Distance from Adelaide (I'm just opposite Vic Park)
2. Fitting into a club that is electric friendly
3. A club that has a scale building interest
4. Good facilities - monarto has the Tarmac runway which is a bonus
5. Relaxed, non political club - there to fly and have a good yarn
I would be interested in your thoughts!

Hi Sandy. Here are some comments about the issues you mentioned.
I live near St Peters and it takes 45 minutes to get to Strath on a weekend. I guess Monarto would be similar given that it is almost all the way on the SE freeway.
I joined SMAC because it is a friendly, non-political club and everyone gets on well. We fly, but we don't take ourselves too seriously and we always aim to have a good time. A fair bit of talking and BS is usually involved.
We have lots of electric fliers, including me. I fly both petrol and electric. We fly foamies quite often just for fun and relaxation. SMAC even has a foamie aerial combat team - we fly Parkzone SE5a and Albatros. It makes for a great spectacle.
We have a very long grass strip without any arboreal obstacles (trees) around the strip. It is a little rough here and there, but no problem for planes over 2-3kg. My petrol planes weigh 6-7kg and the strip is fine. It's a little more challenging for foamies, but we all manage. Turbine jets can and do fly at Strath from time to time. We will be installing an artificial grass runway later this year which should be good for lighter planes. We have the artificial grass, we just need to arrange the installation.
There are a few really good scale modellers at SMAC, but like with many clubs these days, there is probably less focus than before. No shortage of appreciation though, we all appreciate scale models and we'd love to see more members build and fly beautiful scale models.
If you'd like to visit SMAC one weekend, you would be very welcome. Several new members have done that recently before joining. Send me a PM if you are interested and we can arrange to meet there one day and fly.
I'm a newbie to flying (2 years) and to SMAC (1 year). I can't really call myself a scale modeller yet, an apprentice perhaps. I currently fly semi scale foamies and ARFs, but I really want to build (and fly) large scale planes from kits and plans from now on. The first will be a Top Flite Stinson Reliant (have the kit already), then I want to build a Jerry Bates Sea Fury or Bearcat from plans using a short kit. After that, the list is very long and I definitely will need a bigger shed!!
I have found this site so interesting and such an inspiration. These guys are fantastic modellers and I am constantly amazed at what they achieve. I used to mainly follow another site, but now I spend most of my time on RCSB.
