Hi Guys,

My name is Rory Wilson, and I live in Johannesburg South Africa. I have been flying RC for about two years now, having spent most my life building and racing single seat racing cars. I flew very basic 049 control line when I was a kid. I fly at a small club near to home called Modderfontein Model Aircraft Club. About 35 members, but a no pressure great bunch of guys. Not much scale stuff happening though, and this is a big interest for me. I am currently completing a 1:6 Sopwith Camel which is a scratch build. I drew plans from a very basic 3 view drawing. it has been frustrating at times, but greatly enjoyable. I have also started a Nieuport 11 as a scratch, but this is still in very early stages. This one was motivated by a gift of a beautiful Saito 72 FS. Should sound about right, and have plenty of grunt.

Hope to find lots of useful hints and tips on this site, and maybe even share some of my airbrush skills here. I used to do quite a lot of custom spray-painting of custom bikes and racing crash helmets until it was discvovered that the 2K paint is the cause of early emphysema!!! Stopped that quite quickly!!! Acrylics for the planes are okay though.

That's me. look forward to chatting with like minded people.

Rory

Hi Kuhn,

Thanks for the welcome!!

I will pay my membership next month. $20 in South African Rand is quite a lot of money these days, and it is heading towards the end of the month. More month than money again!!!

How long have you been in Bulgaria, and why? Where in SA are you from?

Will chat some more about modelling shortly. Very busy at work today.

Kind regards,

Rory

Hi George, welcome to RCSB!
Kuhn is right, you get out way more than it costs, but I sure understand months and money!

But RC for 2 years and already designing and building - wow!

The 72 for a 1/5 scale N11 is just about perfect.  A friend has one (Proctor kit) he has been flying several years (recovered once and about to recover again) - he has a gyro on the rudder and that helped a great deal on landing!

Looking forward to a build thread on it!

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your welcome.

Yes, only two years RC, but been building things my whole life. My policy, maybe stupidly is, if you want it, - build it!! I designed and built three of my own single seater race cars. Doing 235kph (sorry 145mph) in something you welded together yourself gives you a big thrill!!

I really enjoy the flying, and I managed to solo my trainer after six weeks, and it is great fun, but probably the bigger part of the hobby for me is the building, and not just a Stick or ARF, but something that I can really get my teeth into, and that is why I am so glad that I have found this forum to share ideas and get inspiration. I just need to figure out how to post pictures and things in a thread, and I will post the N11 build.

Take care,

Rory (George)

Oh, well - as a Basic member you are not allowed to post pics, and are limited to 5 posts - so save your next one for something important, until you can become a Site Supporter.  Then it is easy-peasy, just the size of the piccy is limited to 100Kb - there are some tips on reducing file size and so on in the FAQ section.

There are several threads that may be of interest to you in the Scratch build forums - if you have not found them already!
