Of course after finishing the Bulldog I'd love to attempt the Vance Mosher Westland Whirlwind!

Checked in with Warren this morning and the plans went into the post today so hopefully I should get them next week sometime!

He confirmed that those which have been built have ended up in the 18-20lb range.  I reckon a 50cc gas engine should move it along plenty fine.  Especially since I can probably knock a bit of weight out of it, which Warren also mentioned that it should be easy to build it lighter.

Hi Luke. A few thoughts. Might be a bit over powered with a 50cc engine. Trouble is, there's not a lot available between 30cc and 50cc. The VVRC 40cc twin you mentioned earlier should handle an 8kg plane with ease. A 40cc 4 stroke like the OS GF40 or Saito FG-40 might work too, but they are more expensive engines. What about the new Saito FG-60R3 three cylinder radial when it becomes available? That would sound great, but very pricey. Cheers. Sean

Unfortunately I don't think my budget would extend to a Saito radial and to be honest I'm more comfortable with the idea of the vvrc 40cc twin.

EDIT: I should mention I have Warren's approval to have his plans sent away to have the main components laser cut.  Obviously with the understanding that if the cutter wants to offer them for further resale they come to an agreement.

Question for the other Aussie's, where are you getting your Balsa from?

On a previous build I got everything from my local hobby shop, but to be honest it wasn't much fun sorting through their stock to find there really wasn't much worth using and ending up using fairly subpar stuff in places I didn't really want to.  Though I did find some old Sig contest grade stuff hidden away that was good.

Pel-Aero & Balsa Central seem to worth looking at?
