Hi all,
I'm a new flyer (learning) from the Fens.
I have a few likes for non-scale stuff (I do like a flying wing with a bit of fuselage and a fin), but I am mainly scale by inclination.
BUT...I don't like warbirds of any kind and I don't do BIG, so may be a loner on this forum, where everybody seems to be HUGE warbird fans. We'll see. My own tastes are somewhere between say, 32" and 55" spans, Sports and racing planes, especially between the wars types.

I have an old Great Planes Electri-Cub built, but only partly covered, so far which will have an OS 10 in it.  A model boat friend sent it from Munich for peanuts, so I had to have it.
I also rather like the Skyfarer which I have on a free plan from the club hut.  That may depend on whether I can find a small four stroke that's affordable. Having no luck there so far, so may have to go electric for that one.

Ultimately it would be nice to make models of the real aircraft I have been in and even flown, which would mean Chipmunk, Cub, Pitts S2, Fairchild Argus, Slingsby Cadet, Tiger Moth, Auster J5 and my friend had an Andreasson BA4b, but that was a single seater. But I did paint it for him and sign wrote the sides AND I have a plan for one.
So I could be busy.

I have been a professional modelmaker since giving up office work at age 16 and have raised a family and paid several mortgages on the proceeds so must have done something right. If I can help anyone with modelmaking techniques, just shout.  I'm a bit of a metal basher. Current project, a 1/6th scale Vincent Black Shadow, all in brass. A pattern for a large white metal and resin kit, almost finished.  Soldering techniques, hard and soft and metal beating can be discussed.  Also, wood carving/miniature woodwork is something I've done as I've made many models of classic mahogany speedboats over the years.
Always happy to help.

Just made a sprung, steerable noseleg for the Skyfarer.

Cheers,
Martin

Hi MrTin and welcome to RCSB!  There are a number of civilian and racing types being built or have been built here so you are not a lone wolf!

I'm sure the majority here would enjoy seeing your metal techniques, there are lots of opportunities for use on models!

Please check out the site suppporter program (LINK) - in addition to all the other benefits it will allow you unlimited posting and allow you to post your pictures.

MrTin,

Welcome to RCSB site. I personally super-detail Guillow’s kits & share your interests in aircraft from early biplanes, Golden Age, to rare or unusual. So you’ve got plenty of company here.

If I read you correctly about the Sjyfarer, I happened to photograph up close & personal a full sized Skyfarer parked many years ago at Oshkosh AirVenture airshow.

Would really like to share & learn from you many of the techniques you’ve described.

Thanks for the welcome.  I'm a little concerned that I have only 2 more posts to go unless I pay.
I'm afraid I really can't justify any more expenditure on the hobby as it's cost me a small fortune to join a local club and pay the BMFA insurance fees, which you have to do in the UK.

So, whilst this is exactly my kind of forum, I may soon end up disappearing!
And I would have loved to see your photos of the Oshkosh Skyfarer.

Cheers,
MrTin

MrTin,

I am surprised at your conclusion that joining this "club" is expensive... $20 a year is the biggest bargain we get in this hobby. The wealth of information and help you get is worth so much more.

Possibly, but it's just another cost that I can't justify at the moment and I wouldn't have joined if I'd realised.
Never mind.  My loss and good fortune to you all.

You can still view and look at posts, and hang on until you can justify the cost.
